Past Perfect Continuous


The Past Perfect Continuous is used for an action that began before a certain point in the past and continued up to that time.


          I. FORM
          Positive 
Subject + had + been + V - ing + ...
-----------------------------------
I / We / You / They / He / She / It had  been working for two hours.

          Negative 
Subject + had + notbeen + V - ing  + ...
-----------------------------------
I / We / You / They / He / She / It had not  been working for two hours.

          Question
Had + Subject been + V - ing  + ...?
-----------------------------------
Had I / we / you / they / he / she / it been working for two hours?


          II. USE

          1. For an action that began before a certain point in the past and continued up to that time.
                    - When Mr. Priestly came to University in 2000, I had been teaching for over 10 years.
                    - He came at 6 o'clock yesterday evening. I had been waiting for him since 4 PM.
