We use the Past Simple to talk about something that happened at a particular time in the past, for situations or actions during a period of time that ENDED in the past.

II. USE
1. To express a finished action in the definite past time.
- I went to Spain two years ago.
- She left her job last year.
2. To tell a story in past time.
- We left home early on Sunday morning and drove, without stopping to the Scottish border. It took about 6 hours to get there. After we crossed the border, we stopped in a village, and had something to eat.
3. To express a past habit.
- He studied many hours every day.
- She always carried an umbrella.
